Sweet Home Alabama

Yep, those words are no longer just lyrics to one of my favorite songs… I’ve moved to Alabama!

It’s been a little more than a month since me and my main girl Bizzy made the 11 hour drive to Birmingham and set up shop.  Some of you may be surprised to hear that I moved and I’m sorry that I wasn’t able to spend more time saying goodbye but good things happen fast!  And I tell you what- it is crazy hard to pack up and move 17 years’ worth of CRAP from the house you grew up in.  I think I donated 4 boxes of beanie babies, t-shirts, scrunchies and other miscellaneous junk I hadn’t looked at since jr. high.  It was nice to sort of clean up my life and “purge” myself of all that stuff before starting fresh in a new place though.

You may be wondering why I moved? And why the Ham (the nickname so affectionately given to Birmingham)? Those are the 2 questions I get most.  Well, it’s pretty simple really- I needed a change.  Not long after graduating and moving back to The Woodlands, I looked around and got this sinking feeling in my stomach.  Everywhere I went it felt like I was in a constant state of déjà vu.  Places with memories, people with familiar faces, so many things the same but something was always off.  Does that make sense?  It kind of felt like I was living in the past.  Don’t get me wrong, I love The Woods and I’m 100% certain that I have the most wonderful friends in the world who live there, but it just got too unsettling for me.  Maybe I’m not meant to stay in one place for that long.  College Station is a ridiculously fun town but after 5 years I was itching to leave there too.  I’m okay if anyone wants to start taking bets on how long I’ll last in Birmingham.

I found an awesome job - pretty close to my dream job- at a great company and within 2 weeks of applying online I was packed up and headed East!  So now I’m here and loving it.  I live in the Historic Highland area downtown in this charming 1920’s house-converted-to-apartments building.  Sure the floor is crooked and I can’t get rid of the weird smell but it overlooks a beautiful park and it has awesome architectural features inside and out!  I have a 7 mile, 10 minute drive to work but I’ll talk more about my job another time.  Bizzy is missing her Texas back yard so we go on long walks most days and play in the dog park every day after I get home.  On the weekends we hike- there are SO many beautiful hiking areas around Birmingham! This weekend we may try kayaking if it doesn’t rain and my sister-in-law doesn’t go into labor.  We’ll see.

That’s it for now.  I don’t have any illusions that this blog is going to be popular or meaningful to anyone other than myself.  Subscribe if you like, this is just my way of keeping in touch since we all know how horrible I am at answering the phone.  This way everyone can come on my adventures with me and keep track as I continue to be at hot mess everywhere I go.
